A Half-Day at Lake Geneva – Why Not Escape the Airport?

No matter which way you look at it, Geneva Airport is a million miles from the world’s most exciting place…not that any airport is any different. It’s a great place to while away an hour or two, but when plans change and schedules conflict, passing six, seven or even 12 hours in Geneva Airport can feel like a lifetime.

So here’s a suggestion from the pros – why not stop moaning about the horrors of your delays and make the best of them by straying outside the airport? That’s right – not only is there indeed a world outside the airport, but there’s also one of the most stunningly beautiful cities in the whole of Europe right in front of you…Geneva.

Just to get the message over as to how the airport just cannot compete with the city when there’s time to kill, imagine yourself taking in the following sights:

Lake Geneva

It is simply impossible not to fall in love with Lake Geneva – arguable the most beautiful spot in the whole of Europe. Time it right with a nice, clear day and you can catch the reflections of the mighty Alps in the distance, as the cool blue waters shimmer in the sunshine and hypnotise anyone passing by.

Chances are your gaze will be somewhat broken and redirected by the Jet d’Eau fountain, which blasts water an incredible 140 metres into the air and can be seen from much of the city. Few know the jet was originally a practical device used to release pressure from a hydro-electric power generator, but folk in the area loved it so much it became permanent!

A word of warning though – once it is switched on at 10am every morning, heed the proximity warnings or you WILL get very, very wet.

Whatever you decide to get up to, don’t pass up the opportunity to take a boat ride on Lake Geneva itself and take in the sights from an all-new perspective. It really is like throwing yourself in the picture postcard world of a fantasy fairytale – unless of course you try your luck with a bracing dip in the thing and realise it’s usually a hell of a lot colder than it looks!

Avenue de la Paix

On a drier note, not too far away is the Avenue de la Paix on which you’ll find the Palais des Nations, which used to be the HQ of the League of Nations. It’s an extremely poignant and humbling place that cannot fail to capture your imagination and interest, even if you don’t consider yourself to be much of a bona-fide history fan.

Lausanne

If time is on your side, head to one of the other pretty little towns on the banks of Lake Geneva – Lausanne. An art gallery can be found here that’s generally regarded as one of the world’s most interesting – the Collection de l’Art Brut – where you can rest assured you won’t know a single one of the names behind the works. In addition, Lausanne is also where you’ll find the HQ of the International Olympic Committee which is of course complimented by the official Olympic Museum.
