Ellmau is a municipality in the district of Kufstein in the Austrian region of Sölllandl. It lies 12 km southeast of Kufstein and 9 km west of Sankt Johann in Tirol. It is located at an elevation of 820 m above sea level. It was mentioned for the first time in the records in 1155 and is nowadays part of the Ski Welt skiing area. Ellmau is in very picturesque alpine countryside famed for its proximity to the Wilder Kaiser Mountains and the steep wooded and meadowed hills to the south. The village is a very popular vacation resort both in winter and summer. In winter Ellmau lies in the heart of the Wilder Kaiser-Brixental Ski World (or Ski Welt), offering a total of around a hundred lifts, Austria's largest interconnected ski area with 250 km (156 miles) of slopes across very varied and often beautiful terrain. For those concerned about the low altitude range of the area 180 km (112 miles) of the runs are covered with artificial snow. In the 2005-6 season the Ski Welt was further expanded by the Ki-West gondola which links Westendorf (on the Ski Welt pass but not quite lift linked to Ellmau) to the skiing at Kitzbuhel, expanding the nearly-lift-linked terrain available to more than 400km (250 miles).
There are three Airports within two hours’ drive, so ski weekends, snowboard breaks and short ski holidays to Ellmau are perfectly feasible. Innsbruck Airport, Munich Airport and Salzburg Airport are just one hour’s drive away, in good driving conditions, so you can be on the piste quickly. The following airports link the resort and all of them provide transfers.
Trains also connect Ellmau to Insbruck airport and and run Mon-Sat every 2 hours. However some changes might be needed to reach Ellmau. There are train options from Friedrichshafen, Munich, and Salzburg airports too with a journey time of more than 5 hours.
While some people do use the public transport modes listed above, they are time consuming. You are much better off booking an airport transfer from the airport where you land. You will benefit from a shorter journey time and a direct route. You also get the added bonus of travelling in comfort, and of a guaranteed journey that is pre-booked. Airport transfers are also the most cost-effective method of getting to the resort.
